Colossal Seebeck coefficient in strongly correlated semiconductor FeSb2
Submitted by ztadmin on Tue, 2007-10-23 07:57A reader has brought to my attention the following remarkable paper:
A. Bentien, S. Johnsen, G. K. H. Madsen, B. B. Iversen, and F. Steglich, "Colossal Seebeck coefficient in strongly correlated semiconductor FeSb2," Europhysics Letters (EPL), pp. 17008, 2007.
Aparently due to strong corellation and d- character of the bands, FeSb2 exhibits at 12 K perhaps the largest electrical power factor ever reported:
Notes from the 2007 ETS Board Meeting
Submitted by ztadmin on Tue, 2007-10-23 07:34The Board of the European Thermoelectric Society met in Odessa on
September 9, 2007 prior to ECT2007. The following is a brief summary of
some items of general interest discussed at the meeting.
Proposals to Organize ECT
The Board will ask for proposals to organize the annual European
Conference on Thermoelectrics (ECT) and make their decision two years in
advance.
Composition of the ETS Board and Selection Members
The ETS Board shall consist of three officers (President, Vice President
+- Call For Proposals to Host ECT2010
Submitted by ztadmin on Tue, 2007-10-23 07:31The European Thermoelectric Society is requesting proposals to host ECT2010, the 8th European Conference on Thermoelectrics, to be held in Europe in 2010.
Proposals should be submitted to the ETS President, Prof. Scherrer Hubert [dot] Scherrer [at] mines [dot] inpl-nancy [dot] fr (<Hubert [dot] Scherrer [at] mines [dot] inpl-nancy [dot] fr>), prior to ECT2008 to be held in Paris, France July 2-4, 2008.
The ETS Board will make their selection at the annual ETS Board Meeting to be held July 1, 2008. For full consideration, please make submission sufficiently early to allow Prof. Scherrer and the ETS Board to ask questions regarding your proposal.

Implantable Thermoelectric Device Helps Epilepsy
Submitted by ztadmin on Wed, 2007-09-05 14:38This is actually a couple years old, but I stumbled across it today.
A team at Rensselaer and the Washington University of Medicine in St. Louis are developing a small, implantable thermoelectric device and heat pipe to cool specific portions of the brain and help inhibit epileptic seizures. The full story,
http://news.rpi.edu/campusnews/update.do
indicates in 2005 they were moving toward testing in primates.
A journal review article on the subject is available:
